ST MARY'S College Marcus Mottley (L) holds off Christopher Biggette of Diego Martin North

ST BENEDICT’S College could not have asked for a better start to their 2012 Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) campaign, as they drubbed Moruga Secondary 8-1 in their opening clash in Moruga, yesterday.

The “Southern Lions” forward, Jameel Botswain did most of the damage when he scored five goals to assure his team full points in their first match of the tournament. Botswain opened the scoring in as early as the ninth minute and was followed by teammate Tyler Williams in the 42nd (2-0).

Anthony Herbert added another in the 46th to close the first period with a comfortable 3-0 lead.

However, the “Southern Lions” had only just gotten started. The final 20 minutes of the second-half saw a ruthless St Benedict’s team slam five more past the hapless Moruga goalkeeper. Four more goals from Botswain, coming in the (70th, 78th, 81st, 90th) and one from Yaseu Rojet sealed the 8-1 victory for the boys in brown. Moruga’s Aaron Julian was the lone scorer for his team with his goal-bound effort in the 69th.

Meanwhile in the Central Zone, Couva West also took advantage of Gasparillo Secondary as they registered a 6-0 thumping at the Guaracara Park, Point-a-Pierre yesterday. Jaffet Williams secured a deserving hat-trick while teammates Seon Edwards bagged two and Gabriel Boyd one, respectively. Gasparillo are yet to get onto the score sheets.

In the North Zone, Rashaad Hyacinth’s lone goal was just enough to propel St Mary’s College to victory over Diego Martin North. Hyacinth’s goal came in the 77th minute and secured an important start to the 2012/ 2013 season for St Mary’s.
