The Tunapuna Piarco Regional Corporation is committed to revamping the sport of netball nationwide and using netball as a conduit to strengthen our communities. One of their initiatives is the “Back 2 Basics” Community Netball Programme. This is an opportunity for the Regional Corporations to utilize netball as a vehicle to increase inter-community participation and encourage young girls to become involved in sport. It is becoming even more important to re-establish the foundations of culture and sport across the nation, in a concerted effort to reduce crime and promote the importance of living healthy lifestyles. The motto for the programme is “Building Communities”.

The programme will be conducted in three (3) Phases:

Phase 1 (June- September 2018) –  the 3 month programme will be conducted in the following corporations, Tunapuna Piarco Regional Corporation, Arima Borough Corporation, San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation and the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation.

Phase 2 (January – March 2019) – the 3 month programme will be open to include all Regional Corporations.

Phase 3 (May – October 2019) – the programme will be run for six (6) months throughout all the corporations and culminate in Regional Corporation Youth Netball Competition.

A Meet and Greet was held on Wednesday 4th July 2018 at the Arima Town Hall. Attendees included representatives from the participating corporations,  coaches and participants in the programme.

Councillor Michael Castellano welcomed the gathering to the Borough of Arima and congratulated the Tunapuna Piarco Regional Corporation Chair and his team for sprearheading the initiative and including the neighbouring corporations.

Alderman Onika Haynes, brought greetings from the Tunapuna Piarco Regional Corporation and expressed gratitude for all the support thus far. She lamented on the importance of programmes for our youth. She added that this is an opportunity to teach them strong values in discipline, teamwork, sense of community all while developing their netball skills so that we can take netball back to the days of Jean Pierre, when netball was one of the top teams in the World.
