SHERLON PIERRE of Salybia won the 14 kilometre Long Course event and veteran paddler Hugh Harris won the 7k Short Course event, when the 7th Annual Maritime Ortoire River Race was staged recently. The Ortoire River Race was hosted by the Trinidad Kayak Club. One hundred and three participants, including 26 females, in 75 kayaks and one stand-up-paddleboard set off from the Ortoire river bridge and paddled 3.5 kilometres up the river, before turning around and making their way back to the bridge. For most competitors, that was the finish for the short course of 7K. Six paddlers were registered to do the longer course of 14K.
Pierre won the Long Course in one hour, 18 minutes, 51 seconds. In second place was another elite athlete, Matthew Robinson, in a time of 1:20:57. Not long after, Robinson’s brother, Nicholas completed the 14K in 1:24:16. In fourth position was Coast Guardsman Stephano Polo, who had begun training on a surf ski just two months before the race.
In 2011 and 2012, new Long Course winner Pierre was nominated for the First Citizen’s Youth Sportsman Award by the Trinidad and Tobago Canoe/Kayak Federation. He had won the Short course in those two years, and placed second in the Long course in 2013.
Harris was first to the finish in the Short Course, followed thirty four seconds later by 3rd Trinidad Sea Scout Josiah Clarke. In 3rd position was Gary Sookdeo, a member of the TKC.
